History of the Fundación Canaria Observatory Temisas

The FCOT is a non-profit organization, has been developing activities of characteristics and socio-educational, cultural and playful, devoted to the dissemination and teaching of science through Astronomy, and other disciplines and related techniques and complementary, working together with the educational community, and different social groups, public and private, in an unselfish way. We have been acting in this line with professionals and volunteers who give their support to the Observatory of Temisas, long before become Foundation in February 2010.

The idea of the Observatory was a group of fans and scholars of Astronomy, which had, since the beginning, with the support of the “TTAA Farmhouse Canary islands Temisas”, and proposed in his time the Municipality of Agüimes. We chose the town of Temisas is located on a hill that dominates the entrance to the park of la Caldera de Tirajana, about 900 m above the sea level, and about 45 minutes from The Palms and the housing developments in the south of the island. With the skies clear and blue skies most of the year, and a low humidity in the air to be found in the south-eastern slope of Gran Canaria.

The Fundación Canaria Observatory Temisas, aware from the outset, the problem of the “light Pollution”, has been involved in several active campaigns of disclosure of this issue, and is currently collaborating with the ULPGC, the IAC, and the Cabildo of Gran Canaria in this sense.

The reach and impact of our work, it can be measured in a direct way, in the more than 30,000 people who have visited us in the OAT as a Foundation, in accordance with our log books, and who have participated in our many complementary activities. And also in the stories and news that have been referred to us both in the press, radio and television, from years ago, as well as the different web pages and Facebook in which we participate. Today we are known in all the Canary islands, and we started to be in the rest of Spain and in some foreign countries due to tourism.

Attendees to our guided tours weekly on the Observatory and to the calendar and scheduled events, to our talks and conferences, workshops and courses with college credit, seminars, and participation in the “Week of Science” in collaboration with the ITC, visitors that are largely children and young people, known as Astronomy, encourage their critical sense before the avalanche of information of all kinds that will arrive today, and at the same time creating new scientific vocations. That in accordance with our Statutes, the Foundation has among its purposes within the area of Research and Teaching, the duties and responsibilities for initiating research projects, in which is immersed, for which you need more means and equipment professionals currently not available. And finally, the benefits of cultural, educational and social that this project entails, is added to the incentive to be an important tourist attraction alternative as a lookout and landscape observatory of the stars.
